ike I’ve done many times in the past, I showed up for my scheduled mammography appointment without a concern in the world. After all, the results had always been clear. This time, however, something “suspicious” showed up, and so began my journey.
the mammography, I proceeded to get a breast ultrasound, followed by a biopsy. When the news came back that I needed surgery, I wanted to make sure that I went to the best breast surgeon I could find. A consultation with Dr. Joseph at The Breast Center at Nyack Hospital calmed my fears and made me feel like I was going to be OK. Undergoing lumpectomy surgery, and soon thereafter knowing that I would need a mastectomy was very scary, and something I never thought I would be faced with. I had to get to a place in my heart and my head where I could accept this path, yet I was afraid of so many things. Through it all, however, I knew I was where I belonged. Everyone at the Center was “in my corner,” and took a real interest in my case.
goal during this journey has been to get through each step, a day at a time. Less than 24 hours after my mastectomy, I was amazed how much better I felt. The nurse who cared for me was so compassionate, and everyone’s goal was to get me back to living my life as soon as possible.
still going through my reconstruction, but I feel great knowing I’m on the road to a full recovery. I’m looking forward to a springtime of tennis and golfing, and a lifetime with my husband Gary and Benny, our Tibetan Terrier.
