  • More than 37 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 1 in 5 don’t know it.
  • 96 million US adults—over a third—have prediabetes and 8 in 10 don’t know it.
  • Prediabetes raises the risk for type 2 diabetes as well as heart disease and stroke.
  • Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes; type 1 diabetes for about 5-10%.
  • The number of adults in the U.S. diagnosed with diabetes has doubled in the last 20 years.
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic limb amputations, and new cases of blindness in the U.S.  
  • Each year, medical costs and lost work and wages for people with diagnosed diabetes total $327 billion.
  • Medical costs for people with diabetes are twice as high as for people who don’t have diabetes.
Symptoms of Diabetes

If you have any of the symptoms below, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends seeing your primary care provider for more information and testing. 

  • Unusual thirst and hunger
  • Feeling very tired
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent urination, often at night
  • Frequent infections
  • Sores that heal slowly
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Numbness or tingling in hands or feet
  • Very dry skin
Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes

Your chances of developing type 2 diabetes depend on several risk factors, including: 

  • A family history of diabetes
  • A history of gestational diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Hypertension
  • Being overweight
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Ethnicity
  • Lack of physical exercise
